Cranes & Hooklifts

The first known construction cranes were invented by the Ancient Greeks and were powered by men or beasts of burden, such as donkeys. These cranes were used for the construction of tall buildings. Larger cranes were later developed, employing the use of human treadwheels, permitting the lifting of heavier weights. In the High Middle Ages, harbour cranes were introduced to load and unload ships and assist with their construction – some were built into stone towers for extra strength and stability. The earliest cranes were constructed from wood, but cast iron, iron and steel took over with the coming of the Industrial Revolution.

For many centuries, power was supplied by the physical exertion of men or animals, although hoists in watermills and windmills could be driven by the harnessed natural power. The first ‘mechanical’ power was provided by steam engines, the earliest steam crane being introduced in the 18th or 19th century, with many remaining in use going into the late 20th century. Modern cranes usually use internal combustion engines or electric motors and hydraulic systems to provide a much greater lifting capability than was previously possible, although manual cranes are still utilized where the provision of power would be uneconomic.

Cranes exist in an enormous variety of forms – each tailored to a specific use. Sizes range from the smallest jib cranes, used inside workshops, to the tallest tower cranes, used for constructing high buildings. Mini-cranes are also used for constructing high buildings, in order to facilitate constructions by reaching tight spaces. Finally, we can find larger floating cranes, generally used to build oil rigs and salvage sunken ships.

Some lifting machines do not strictly fit the above definition of a crane, but are generally known as cranes, such as stacker cranes and loader cranes.

SwapLoader U.S.A., Ltd., located in Des Moines, Iowa, is a sister company of EFCO Corp., a leading manufacturer and worldwide distributor of Systems for Concrete Construction.

EFCO, with over 65 years of manufacturing expertise, began the development of SwapLoader through a Swedish subsidiary in the early 1980’s. At that time, EFCO manufactured hook-lift hoists that were marketed in Europe and used by the Swedish military. Benefiting from the valuable experience gained in Europe, EFCO brought SwapLoader to the U.S. two decades ago. With EFCO’s state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and capabilities, and unparalleled engineering expertise, SwapLoader was completely overhauled to meet EFCO’s exacting standards; it was totally Americanized with all-American parts and built to suit the needs of American haulers.

Today, they maintain their commitment of quality first, they vow to keep SwapLoader on the cutting edge of the hook-lift hoist industry, and they guarantee super service to their distributors and customers.

National Crane

Starting as a small family business in 1945, National Crane has come to symbolize the gold standard of durable boom trucks. The company has led the market in its field for decades, and an estimated 90 percent of all National Crane products sold since 1963 are still in operation today. This is a particularly impressive record, considering well over 30,000 National Crane units have been delivered.

National Crane currently produces 12 series of boom trucks, ranging in capacity from 7,25 t (8 USt) to 36 t (40 USt). It also produces pedestal-mounted versions of its cranes for use in industrial applications, as well as a range of accessories such as personnel baskets, pallet forks and clamshell buckets.

Its products are usually subject to demanding work routines, being required to lift several times a day, every day. With such intensive work schedules, reliability, durability and ease of operation are key factors. National Cranes has all three – in abundance.

Hiab Loglift 265Z

The LOGLIFT 265Z is the flagship of the Z-model series, featuring previously unseen lifting capacity and reach in its class. Due to the ingenious design of the long auxiliary cylinder, the performance of the light and compact the LOGLIFT 265Z is superior compared to other cranes in its class. The LOGLIFT 265Z is a good alternative to tree-length cranes with a straight boom, as it does not limit the truck’s cab-height or take up valuable cargo space from the timber. Features include:

  • nDurance – Protect your investment! Uphold long-term performance with effective anti-corrosive protection! High-Tech paint process based on nano-technology and e-coating.
  • Oil Bath – Keeping the slewing mechanism immersed in oil is a prerequisite in the heavy-duty type of work that Loglift cranes perform. The oil bath provides smooth and precise slewing and reduces wear on the mechanism, keeping repair and service costs to a minimum.
  • Hydraulic Pilot Control – Easy control of the flow. Enjoy the feeling of feather light crane steering Hydraulic pilot control (HPC) gives you light responsive controls and a smoother controls and a smoother crane ride.
  • Double-Rack Slewing – Especially suitable for heavy-duty applications. The end cushion dampens slewing effectively when approaching the limit. The double-rack design is extremely reliable and also gives high torque – keeping maintenance costs down and productivity up. Rack and pinion slewing provides reliable operation even on inclines or slopes.
  • Swivelling Couplings – Increase the lifetime of hydraulic hoses. Hoses can move more freely when the crane rotates which reduces wear. This means you spend less time on repairs, have lower maintenance costs, and are awarded increased uptime. The swivelling couplings are a JIC coupling rotating together with the hose. These types of couplings are found on all hydraulic lines for pressure, tank and slewing going from crane base to the control valve and the boom system.
  • Safety+™ – Safety package including all the safety features you need. New hour and cycle counter displays important operational parameters. The Safety+ system makes the crane safe to move and operate, and offers smart features for a high safety level in your forestry crane, ensuring you are compliant with the EU machinery directive.
  • Hose Protection Link (HPL) – Irregular loads such as logs, branches and scrap metal can be a problem, and damage equipment; hydraulic hoses, in particular, are at risk. The HPL is a smart way of protecting them.
  • Top Seat – Comfort is a priority when you work outdoors, especially when conditions are extreme. The high seat is comfortable, ergonomic and easy to access. You can adjust your seat upwards, downwards, forwards and backwards to find your own ideal working position. Your high seat can also be heated, or equipped with a protective hood that folds out from behind your head.
